In the term 国庆, the Chinese word for "National Day", the first Chinese character 国 (guó) stands for the country, while the second 庆 (qìng) means to celebrate the joyful and happy festivities.
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the October 1st (Beijing time) of each year has been designated as China's "National Day Festival", which means the national anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is also considered the "birthday" of the motherland by the Chinese.
In Chinese language, the China National Day Festival is also called 国庆节 (guó qìng jié) (Chinese National Day Festival), or with date like 十一国庆节 (shí yī guó qìng jié) (National day Festival of October 1), or just 十一 (shí yī) (Oct. 1st) for short, which indicates the day on October 1st.

Chinese National Day Holidays are not specifying the first day of October only, but usually including seven-day-continuous public holidays starting from October 1st to October 7th.
Comparing with some Chinese Long Weekend Holidays, the Chinese National Day Holidays usually last for at least 7 days long, which is currently the second-longest legal public holidays besides the Spring Festival in China.
And in some special year, when China's Mid-Autumn Festival meets the Chinese National Day, the celebration for both traditional festivals will be combined together. As a result, one more day will be added to the Chinese National Day Holiday and to prolong the public vacation.
For example, the Chinese National Day Festival for 2020 allows people to enjoy a total of 8 days until October 8 as the end. Among holidays of that year, the first day of October in 2020 is not only the 2020's Chinese National Day Festival but also the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival of the year.
Furthermore, the Chinese National Day Holidays is also the best time period for people to go out for traveling, enjoying vacations, go shopping, and for other consumptions.
That's the reason that the Chinese National Day Holidays are also called 十一长假 (shí yī cháng jià) (Long National Day Holidays), or 十一黄金周 (shí yī huáng jīn zhōu) (Golden Week Holidays) in China.
